Groupon.com and LivingSocial.com are two websites that are helping business owners reach thousands of potential customers and giving spend-savvy consumers on the prowl for deep discounts a new reason to check their emails every day.
How it Works:
- Businesses create an account, either online or by contacting the company, and submit their promotional offer. The most successful offers have an “oh wow” factor, such as a free service with a minimal purchase, or a deeply discounted product, often up to 90 percent off.
- Consumers sign up to receive daily emails highlighting one “unbeatable” deal on a service, product, and everything in between, in their area. Those consumers can then forward the email to a friend, usually for an added perk.
But here’s the trick to success: The consumer website will only guarantee the offer if a certain amount of consumers sign up to receive the deal. If the quota isn’t met, the offer is revoked and the business makes no money through the promotion.
