As the kick-off to the show season for the professional beauty industry, the International Salon & Spa Expo (ISSE) Long Beach show is where the hottest products and trends are often launched. In helping to cultivate what the hot products and trends will be, the Professional Beauty Association (PBA) releases an annual “Hot List” of products and services that exhibit at the show. One such trend that debuted at ISSE Long Beach in 2011 and has taken off is hair feathers. Not just any hair feathers, ornamental Asian rooster feathers that have since become the must-have hair accessory. This was the hottest product at the show and was even filmed by Entertainment Tonight, which came to ISSE Long Beach in search of the latest and greatest in beauty.

… these hair feathers have caused an economic conundrum. With demand continuing to rise and not enough supply, suppliers are struggling to keep up with a trend that is starting to hit mainstream.”

Having mainly been used as a fishing lure, these hair feathers have caused an economic conundrum. With demand continuing to rise and not enough supply, suppliers are struggling to keep up with a trend that is starting to hit mainstream. While beauty trade outlets such as Modern Salon and Beauty Launchpad were quick to report on the trend from ISSE Long Beach, consumer media outlets such as the New York Times, USA Today, the Associated Press, and others are now starting to pick up on it and the economic issues with the fishing industry. Hairstylists have been going to bait-and-tackle supply stores in search of the coveted 11” – 14” feathers and scouring eBay. Rooster farmers and fisherman alike are finding they can make more money selling to the beauty industry than to the fishing industry.

The trend is popular for several reasons. The feathers are new, unique, affordable, versatile, and stylists can make money without spending valuable time applying them. You can dye them, flat iron them, and easily put them in or take out. From “mild-to-wild,” this look is great for girls and women of all ages.

Stay tuned as this trend continues to develop. To learn more and be a part of ISSE Long Beach and ISSE Midwest in the Chicago area, visit www.probeauty.org/isse.
