“True Blue Baby!” …In the Head of A Performer

Friday, March 25th, 2011

My Mama told me when I was young, “You need a Dorothy Hamill!” And I, had, the time of my li-i i-fe!

And, I owe it all to Blue-ue-ue-ue-ue! You feel like paradise and I need a vacation… I think I need some “Cruiz Wear!” Cause sticks and stones may break my bones but Glitter Threads excite me!

Oh, and P.S… could you bleach my brows? Wait… What?!?

It is a true pleasure to share with you my three main intrigues that keep me inspired every single day! The love of Fashion, Finish and, of course, the Fabulous! Let’s take a trip in the “Now” of these three big F”s and find out the what, why and how… Ready… Set… “True Blue Baby!”

The Fashion

Walk, Walk, March, Pump… WORK!

As we jump into spring, we are seeing on the runways all over the globe, Ocean Drive in Miami, The South of France and even a cement pond in the middle of nowhere (OK, I have obviously been there! LOL! ) a new spin on spring/summer clothing, simply called ”Cruiz Wear.” And, I must say… Hot Hot Hot!

Inspired by the easy fabric of summer and a feel of sexy relaxation, short cropped, open bottom pants  hug and move along the waist and thigh, opening at the knee to allow an ankle boot, pump or glittery ballerina slipper full display (Oh, and P.S. guys, you can have it too, put a military boot with it and get it!). The light-weight body hugging gauze sweaters accompany the look with contrasted patterns and hues, creating a mix-and-match estravaganza that is taking over the runways (and who doesn’t like to mix and match?!? Everyone!) And, it’s in done in shades of BLUE! But, not too bright and overpowering, rather a “blackened blue” that has depth with contrast of white and the playful colors of a blackened orange.

If you aren’t feeling the “Cruiz Wear,” no worries… there’s also a “Glam Punk” gender play undertone that is on the edgier side of fashion. Imagine an early Guns & Roses, but with a richer flare! (If your not sure who G&R is, just Google it. They’re fabulous!).

Body hugging leather leggings and pants; biker leather with epillettes, flat studs and rivets. Put with a shear shirt and you can glam it up all summer long! I mean… why wouldn’t you wear leather in the summer… on a picnic… in the bright summer sun! LOL! Would you hold it against me?!?

The Finish

Showcase your “Blue Effect”

It’s not just the fashion that showcases the “Blue Effect,” it goes right into the hair! The multi-dimensional illusion of a single tone moves perfect with every head twist! You can take that brunette that craves cool-toned effects into a whole new identity. The new brunette is sort of like the traditional blonde…..THEY DON’T WANT ANY RED! (Is it red? Does it look red? I think it’s kind of red?… No, it’s not red. Take a look at it in the parking!) The “True Blue” thought is to not just take an ash tone or a neutral that could make your color too opaque. Think on a level 5 or 6 brunette, try utilizing a shear blue reflective pigment and micro slicing through the interior pariatel ridge, or even as an overlay at the finish. Give reflection and cool luxury to every brunette canvas to have the time of your life!

The cuts of now have movement, soft seamless texture and a full round form. Are they short, medium or long? I say “D” all of the above! Wear what you feel great in and give it a new twist. Instead of a-symetry and disconnection, think multi levels. Shorter under cuts with a precision edge and longer drop of the top by only half an inch will provide the full finish. I am sure you have been putting your flat iron to the side and taking out those round brushes once again. With that said, this new rebirth of the classic Dorothy Hamill is creating intrigue, influencing many of the fringes, bobs and collapsed temporals. Many people who know of or even wore this beauty are thinking “hmmmmmm.” I have always said that if you were spinning on ice, this cut looked great! But the full-hair freedom of collapsed and round layers bring the cut’s personality to life! Show me something good!

The Fabulous

Ok, the fabulous is you!

The fabulous is about anything that makes you new! This is what makes the above Fashion and Finish come to fruition! When they are researched and developed, designers, manufacturers, even automobile designers and architects, look to learn the why, what and how any design makes us all tick.

The new fashion accessory is this metallic glitter thread tie-in extension! I have seen this on show floors around the globe, and now the mainstream celebrity circuit is adorning these glittery hair wonders. I have always thought that if you want reflection, you could slice a shear tone of color through your hair, but now just tie in some thread and call it a day! Add some puffy paint and watch it sparkle! Na-na-na-na, come on!

The make-up world is also taking this “Blue” effect into motion. Refective deep blue shadows on the lower lid that play on dark navy liner to give a sexy cool eye! The gender play of guy liner is played into fashion as well, letting everyone share in the fun!

The electro pop rhythmic sounds of Rhianna, GaGa, Christina, Will I Am, and the new Britney (I have always loved you girl!) set the fashion, beat and finish.

The last is the crave that I am sure a lot of you have been questioned with or, if not, will soon be I am sure, is the thought of bleached brows! It has always been a question to those that color, if they should match their brows to their color, or even those with brows much darker than their natural hair to take away the dark brow or leave it like Madonna in the early 90s. This snowy look that is not just for high fashion divas any longer is becoming a cool androdgynous effect that makes the hair and eye makeup much stronger with a cool-meets-weird-meets-intriguing illusion I am in love with! Helllooooo… if you don’t have the arch or color you want, bleach them until you can’t see them! LOL! (Bleach in the air….but I like the smell of it!)

I hope that you enjoyed my “True Blue” interpretation. I can’t wait for you to visit again next month for another “Dip & a Trip… In the Head of A Performer!” I am fortunate to be able to view the world, as I am sure most of you are, a bit differently! Finding beauty in everything I see and everything I do! I crave the inspiration from the 3 F’s and this gives me my interpretation of what I want to put into hair! I tell myself every day “Life is not a dress rehearsal…..live it , love it, create it!”

Professional Beauty Association Releases 2010 Market Shipment Results

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Beauty Companies see Solid Increase in Hair Care Product Shipments

Phoenix, AZ (March 16, 2011) – The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) released the results of its semi-annual Market Shipment Study of the professional hair product category. The 2010 year-end study reports that overall, the hair care market experienced positive year-over-year growth of 2.35 percent from 2009 to 2010.  This growth is based on total hair care product shipments of $1.9 billion. PBA’s Market Shipment Study is based on an anonymous survey tabulated by an independent firm and includes the results from some of the largest professional hair care manufacturers in the world. Not only are the results from the year-end 2010 PBA Market Shipment Study a positive for the beauty industry, they are further proof of an economic rebound and a return of consumer confidence.

Highlights from the year-end 2010 PBA Market Shipment Study include:

  • Total hair color shipments increased by 6.3 percent from 2009 to 2010
  • Total hair care shipments increased by 3.2 percent in the same period
  • Smoothing/straightening category increased shipments by 3.0 percent

PBA’s semi-annual Market Shipment Study is one of the most anticipated studies that the association releases. The study tracks overall market shipments of professional hair care products in the hair color, hair care, styling, texturizing, and other product categories and sub-categories.  The survey is produced twice a year and provided complimentary to firms that participate in the study, $500 for non-participating manufacturers, and $1,500 for other members of PBA. The survey is not made available to non-PBA members. The importance of the annual PBA Market Shipment Study, and access to it, is one of the key reasons hair care manufactures, in particular, invest in PBA membership. White Hot Short Hair

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Short hair is hot and really makes a statement when paired with great hair color! In this dynamic duo, the amazing Rusk Deepshine White powdered lightener was used to achieve the most highly sough after color for short hair… the perfect platinum blonde! Allow me to share a few of my latest looks, hot off the New York runways.

Milena’s cut was created with amazing texture in the interior and also has a soft, feminine perimeter featuring several styling options.

Milena’s first style (left) is a 60s inspired shape.  To get the look, simply blow dry the hair smooth and play up the shine with a few drops of today’s popular argan oil like RUSK Deepshine Oil.

To achieve the second look (right), sculpt in classic finger waved pattern held in place with a firm holding gel like the new RUSK W8LESS Spray Gel.

The sky is the limit as to the ways you can wear your short hair. Our hair is our finest accessory and having various styling choices will allow you to have a great hair day EVERY day!

Pony Up: The Many Personalities of the Pony-tail

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Photo by Randy Taylor, NYC 2011 Spring Fashion Week.

Simply Sophisticated.
The pony-tail is one hairstyle that will always remain in style. The vast majority of women worldwide (75%) wear their hair long enough to pull off this easy style transformation. The pony-tail is favored as an easy option to create stylish “second day” hair. Additionally, the pony-tail is the go-to look for high fashion seen on runways and red carpets alike.

It’s All About Placement and Texture.
The pony takes on different personalities depending upon where you choose to secure it and whether the hair is straight or curly. To prove the point, let’s take a look at several examples.

Soft and Romantic.
This look for Carrie Underwood, with gently cascading curls gathered low and off to the side, is sweet and stylish. To get this look, create the curls by wrapping the hair around a 1 1/4″ curling iron. Always use a heat protector whenever using heat styling tool. Twist the hair to one side and secure with pins.

Simply Elegant.
Jennifer Aniston looks lovely with this midway placed pony. This sleek style is great for those who don’t have bangs. If the hair is fine and thin you can easily make it appear thicker and and more voluminous with a little back brushing. Be sure to smooth away frizzies with a light misting of a shine spray.

High and Mighty.
For a more extravagant version we refer to two ladies known to make style statements: Madonna and Lady Gaga. Here we see Madonna in the 1990s with a high pony-tail wrapped with a braid. Similarly pictured is the look Lady Gaga donned at the recent Grammy Awards. If your pony is short, the secret to the stars is to add hair wefts to create the added thickness and length. First, create your own pony tail, then wind a matching hair weft around it and pin securely. (Theses are widely available at your local beauty supply.) When feeling whimsical, this look can easily be translated into a great style for a night out on the town.

NAHA Legend Charlie Price Dishes on Beauty Events

Friday, March 11th, 2011

Charlie on stage at ISSE Long Beach 2011

Two-time NAHA Hairstylist of the Year, long-time ISSE Long Beach educator, and stylist extraordinaire Charlie Price was recently featured in Stylist and Salon Newspapers. In his March article, Charlie talks about how important it is for salon professionals, from students to seasoned pros, to attend and participate at industry events.

Here’s a snapshot of what Charlie has to say in his article “Navigate Toward Success in the Beauty Industry” :

“My involvement with hair shows began when I attended and participated in every way I could at all the major shows upon obtaining my Colorado cosmetology license in 1988. Now, many years later and after many sleepless nights, I am at the same shows but as a headlining platform artist… I loved all the shows then, and I love them now, because they reveal the soul of our industry and provide all the education, inspiration and perspective one could ask for. Career skills, ranging from learning the latest techniques to how to market yourself, are gained at the shows. It is ripe for the picking, all under one roof, lined up in row after row of booths — the good, the bad, and the frizzy (and in some cases the loud, crazy and barely clothed). Who could ask for anything better?”

PBA Salon/Spa Member Making A Mark On Capitol Hill

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

PBA Salon/Spa member Patricia Owen  has gone from savvy salon owner to member of her local Chamber of Commerce to earning a seat on the Board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. An active advocate of the PBA-endorsed FICA Tip Tax legislation, Patricia is an extraordinary example of an entrepreneur working to make a difference for the future of the beauty industry.

Patricia was recently interviewed by Stacey Soble, Editor and Chief for Salon Today magazine. Here’s a short clip from Stacy’s Salon Today Blog:

“Over the years though, I’ve also been fascinated with her gradual growth into politics, from becoming active in her local Chamber of Commerce to now serving on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Last year, I touched base with Patricia after she had the chance to enlighten members of the U.S. Congress on the interests of small business owners and meet with President Barack Obama. With her current position on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, she’s also become a consultant to the Professional Beauty Association’s ongoing government affairs efforts, in the areas of small business, and shared the interests of the professional beauty industry with the Chamber of Commerce.”

MAKE It Education Launches “Business Brains for the New Hair Salon Owner”

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

The following is reprinted from a press release. PBA has no affiliation with MAKE It Education or the “Business Brains for the New Hair Salon Owner” program.

MAKE It Education recently launched its business education program “Business Brains for New Hair Salon Owners”, a program that provides 100 percent applicable business knowledge to anyone considering owning their own hair salon or becoming an independent contractor. According to research recently provided by the Professional Beauty Association, 90 percent of all salon industry establishments are non-employee based. These include self-employed salon owners and independent contractors.

According to the Small Business Association, 30 percent of all small businesses fail within the first two years and 50 percent within five years. The purpose of MAKE It Education is to provide applicable business knowledge with the ultimate goal of reducing hair salon failures. According to MAKE It Education Creative Director Kristin Murphy, “failure can never be an option and with our Business Brains program, we have developed an incredibly creative program that educates and captures the attention of our artistic audience”.

Business Brains is a half-day, high-impact program that provides the necessary knowledge to anyone considering owning their own hair salon or going out on their own independently. The class is fast paced and is not what one might consider a “traditional” business class.

“There is nothing boring about this necessary business class” according to co-founder Matt Walsh. MAKE It Education is currently marketing their Business Brains program to cosmetology schools around the United States. “Beauty schools have evolved into industry changing institutions and are producing high-quality graduates, but the skill sets of these rising stars don’t make them fully prepared for what lies ahead when they decide to open their own hair salon” according to Walsh.

About MAKE It Education
MAKE It Education was founded by Matt and Andrea Walsh and Kristin Murphy and taps into over 20 years of successful business ownership, especially in the salon and spa industry. Failure can never be an option and should never be defined as simply as, “not trying”. Failure has a long reach and therefore it remains the goal of Business Brains for the New Hair Salon Owner to help reduce failures through applicable knowledge and education. Visit www.makeitedu.com for more information.

Special Occasion Hair… And a Photo Shoot!

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

PRESENT AT PRECIOUS MOMENTS.

As stylists, we are present at some of the most important moments in a person’s life. Just think about it… we are there for weddings, proms, graduations, and even funerals. The salon is the first place a new mom goes on her first day out. We hear about it when our clients receive a promotion, become engaged, and get a divorce!  We fix them up for job interviews, parties, romantic dates, and all sorts of special occasions. We are more than just stylists. We are image consultants viewing from behind the chair the most paramount moments of people’s lives.

PASSION FOR PHOTO SHOOTS.

With the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, we decided to create a bridal-themed collection. We wanted to expand our salon’s portfolio with wedding and prom hair so our clients would know that those options were available to them. Having recently developed an amazing passion for doing hair and makeup for photo shoots, as a special treat, I flew the Sherri’s Hair Salon Team to New York City for a private makeup class with David Maderich and photo shoot with famed cover photographer, Roberto Ligresti.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Realizing the importance of creating gorgeous styles to suit each individual, it is crucial to work both effectively and efficiently. Having just a few classic styles in your repertoire will allow you to pull off fantastic fashions for your clients most magnificent moments. I encourage stylists to attend hands-on classes for “special occasion hair”.  (Look for more information on advanced seminars in future blogs!) The day before the shoot, I practiced on Amy Lauren’s hair (left). We took pictures to experiment with different angles to see how the camera would capture the texture. There is so much preparation that goes into a photo shoot; however, by the time we arrived at the shoot, it was all planned out.

PRESENT YOUR WORK FOR PUBLICATION.

After the shoot was all over and we were home, we anxiously awaited the arrival of the re-touched photos. Photographer Roberto Ligresti printed them up in lovely 11”x14” portfolio-sized photos.  He also burned the high-resolution images to a disc to submit to magazine editors. You can see our full-page feature in the March issue of Beauty LAUNCHPAD Magazine. The accompanying article shares some of our on-set tricks used to create the lovely looks. So far, we have been fortunate to secure a super online feature at HOT! by Hair’s How, and a 3-page spread in the STYLE SOURCE Magazine. From the joys of being there for our clients’ most special moments, to the excitement of session styling, to the rewards of seeing our work published, I can truly say, “We have the best job in the world!” Don’t you agree?

Twist of Glamour: Photo-Worthy Hair

Monday, March 7th, 2011

I recently attended a Modern Salon Artist Session where I created this magazine-worthy style. When you’re working on a photo shoot, the stakes are much higher for beautiful, memorable hair.  With a ”Twist of Glamour”, I would like to share with you tips to create long hair-inspired classic finger waves from the 20s, mixed up with the rough texture of the 80s.

Here are the steps I took to creat the look:

Step1: Apply a thickening creme like Rusk Being Gusty and blow dry the hair for texture and hold. Leave top section slightly damp and create finger-wave pattern on each side of center part.

Step 2: Spray individual small sections with a heat protecting spray and curl in spirals using a tiny iron. Spray completed set for hold and allow to cool completely. Step 3: Brush out small sections and tease with tease brush.

Step 4: Have great make-up applied!
