Help Your Beauty Colleagues In Aftermath of Violent Tornadoes

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Devastation in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Photo by Fox News.

At no time this year has a need to reach out and help your beauty colleagues been more apparent than right now.  The violent and devastating tornadoes that struck the South, sweeping through seven states, wiping out entire communities and killing hundreds, has activated the NCA Disaster Relief Fund and beauty professionals across the U.S. are already taking action to help their brothers and sisters in beauty recover and rebuild.

You can be part of this recovery. PBA | NCA is asking all industry professionals to make their tax deductible donations to the NCA Disaster Fund. If you would like to make a donation, or if you or someone you know was affected, visit probeauty.org/disaster-relief-fund.

About the NCA Disaster Relief Fund

The NCA Disaster Relief Fund was established in 1955 to assist salons in rebuilding following the devastation of natural disaster. Over the course of five decades, the fund has been there for professionals in times of dire need.

The Best Brush

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Finding the perfect brush for your mane can prove to be a “hairy” situation. From paddle to round, vent to boar bristle, the choices are abundant. I recommend buying a brush based on how you want to style your hair. For example:

Paddle Brush

Paddle Brushes are fantastic for detangling and drying long hair. Their wide, flat bases are perfect for creating straight, smooth styles.

Round Brushes by Rusk

Round Brushes (like the RUSK Heat Freak brush) will create volume and body and are available in small, medium, large and jumbo-sized barrels. When used with the heat of a blow dryer, the smaller round brushes act like rollers to create curl and movement. The larger round brushes smooth tresses and add body.

Vent Brush by Denman

Vent Brushes (like the Denman vent) help to quickly dry your hair straight, creating no bend. A vent brush has extra wide spaced teeth, which make it excellent for detangling wet or dry hair. It also speeds up blow-drying time by allowing heat to get to the hair faster. You can find vent brushesin two sizes: small (for short to medium length hair) and large (for those with longer lengths).

Teasing Brush by Monroe

Teasing Brushes (like this one from Monroe) are widely available and can help you to softly back brush your hair to develop desired volume in your crown area. Staggered bristle lengths aids in penetrating and lifting hair.

Boar Bristle Brush by Rusk

BoarBristle Brushes (like the RUSK DaVinci) penetrate and grip hair and help stimulate the scalp to release natural oilswhile you brush. A boar bristle brush will provide a relaxing scalp massage while simultaneously smoothing all lengths of hair.

“Pretty” Anyone?… In the Head of A Performer

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Gauze and Terry – It feels so very – good on my der -ri-ere… Do the pretty girl rock!

You notice what I’m wear’in… I’m notici’in you starin… boy I like your haircut! And check out your new high lights… Is that Balayage?

You can learn to to do make-up, and you can learn to do color, BUT…. You can’t learn Pretty!

Oh, and P.S… could you put feathers in my hair? Wait… WHAT?

It is a true pleasure to share my three main intrigues that keep me inspired every single day! The love of Fashion, Finish and of course the Fabulous! And to add a little spice, let’s also take a look at the Face.

Now, Let’s take a trip in the “Now” of these big F”s and find out the what, why and how? Ready… Set… “Pretty” Anyone?

The Fashion

All eyes on me when I walk in. No question this girl’s a 10!  This is the confidence and strength of the summer season “Kick Off”!

The feminine militant strength (OK, men too. This look is the fashion for us all! Remember the key word “Gender Play”), and the 2011 summer fashions are individual and full of life! From the runways of Milan or the sidewalks of a small town somewhere (LOL – maybe my neighborhood!), the craze is short, tailored and individual. The fabrics that give us “Humble Luxury” all while making us feel individual, are totally embracing gauze and terry cloth! The short stream-line, body-hugging fabrics that let us breathe and move through our summer days are adorned with short tailored jackets, stuffed shoulder pads, and large-button hardware for cool summer nights, and adorned with an ankle boot  and scrunch sock (Sorry ladies, Drop the sandals this summer!). Walk any where you choose with an over-sized shoulder bag and you will look and feel like a runway diva! Don’t hate me cause I’m beautiful!

The Finish

Hotter than the “A-list”… next one on my hit list!

The finish of the new summer cuts and colors are embracing the strength of tone and shape that make all of us as individual as the fashions I am wearing! Forget about color foil patterns and haircuts that are the same as the last client you just finished! I want something that works for me and my haircut! No extra value meal here, buster! I don’t want chocolate and vanilla… I want Khaki and sugar cookie, LOL!

The new craving of Balayage (the french word for “hair painting”) takes “Ombre” to a whole new level. Both men and women can have their individual and personal look created by the re-birth of this classic technique!

Here is your Balayage how -to:

1) Control the flow and application of your color to give definition and clarity to your canvas, while not making it a “blur” working on the round points of focus, which are at the occipital bone, parietal crown and the front temporal meets recession.

2) Starting in the back of the head at the occipital, taking a diagonal forward parting, alternate your colors starting from the low center and moving upwards to the outside of the parting. Depending on the amount of coverage needed, a natural look, tends to be with about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch between tones.

3) Apply from scalp to ends with your tone, while either placing each strand on cotton strips, plastic film or my favorite is to utilize cotton roll, placing one piece at the scalp and one on the mid-range to not allow colors to sit on one another. Follow the same diagonal sectioning and application, moving toward the crown and then to the front temporal/recession zone.

4) Continue to alternate your tones, diffusing from the scalp and working through the ends. When working with 2 to 3 tones,  I go by the general rule of darkest on the low occipital, medium through the crown and then as you move closer to the front hairline and top lid, the idea is to, of course, keep it the lightest shade.

The softness and clarity together with this “no mess” application from the GOLDWELL tools, will keep your clients wearing a signature look. Put this on a re-birth of the Mia Farrow Vidal Sassoon classic with new blunt texture and call it a day! You know that I can take it to the next level baby!

The Fabulous

OK, the Fabulous is everything that we all do! So… the Fabulous is YOU!

So this new infatuation of feathers anchored in the hair has become the crave everywhere! Across the globe, I have got to see them. They shampoo, flat iron and curl! I am not sure of why and how, though I remember growing up with those “feathers” we anchored to our hair that had a special clip attached to them (Mmm Hmm. LOL!)), and we all made sure that at the county fair we had a new set! Maybe it’s that Steven Tyler is a new host of American Idol!?! Regardless, they are here for the time being and I am embracing them! Hello?!? Dude, looks like a lady!

The Face

Take summer to a whole new glow. Bronzer, liner, lash… but don’t leave without your lip gloss! “You Can’t learn Pretty!”

No matter were you go this summer, the gloss shade is still all about RED!  Line them and gloss them, just don’t forget them! (On a BIG P.S. – RuPaul’s Drag Race is at it’s final 3! This is my favorite downtime, and my personal inspiration to find charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent! Go to logotv.com for Season 3 episodes!)

The electro-pop rhythmic sounds of Britney and Nicki Minaj, Keri Hilson and, yes, even that girl who wines about “Your gonna catch a cold…“, Jar of Hearts, are leading us into summer. The rythyms are making us move our shoulders and pump along through the day ( Turn up that song… that’s my Jam!). What’s funny is that it reminds me of the early 90’s club scene, thump-a-thump! Music that sounds the same, but makes you Get It-t-t-t! ( Hello?!? “EnVogue” early 90’s anyone?) It is the same back beat as the the gay bars world-round that made everyone want to dance (oh, the memories!) OK. Adore It!

I hope that you enjoyed the latest edition of “A Dip & A Trip… In the Head of A Performer” and I can’t wait for you to visit again next month! I am fortunate to be able to view the world, as I am sure most of you are, a bit differently! Finding beauty in everything I see and everything I do! I crave the inspiration from the 3 F’s and this gives me my interpretation of what I want to put into hair! I tell myself every day that “Life is not a dress rehearsal… Live it, love it, create it!”

Beauty Whirled

Sherri Jessee Hits the Road with Nancy O’Dell

Beauty Whirled -

Sherri Jessee’s upwardly mobile career rose another impressive notch when TV host and Entertainment Tonightpersonality Nancy O’Dell signed on as the official celebrity spokesper-son for Rusk and BaBylissPRO.
Today, between tending to her salon business, headlining at numerous trade shows throughout the world and keeping up with O’Dell’s fre-quent media appearances, Jessee’s schedule is literally bursting at the seams. “I’m a typical stylist. When I’m busy, I’m thrilled; when I’m not, I get restless and bored,” she laughs. “Fortunately, I can’t recall the last time I didn’t have too much to do.”
As for O’Dell, Jessee has perfected her Hollywood hairstyles, includ-ing swift style changes that are frequently needed when her star client does multiple appearances or interviews in a single day. “As a Rusk Creative Team member, I’ve worked with Nancy when she’s done live TV interviews, an infomercial and numer-ous how-to videos, as well as several charity fundraisers, which include the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association and the “Nashville Rising” benefit concert,” Jessee relates. “It’s so important to have a plan and remain organized—which hairstyles Nancy will be wearing when, and how to achieve all of them without overworking her hair.
“I usually start preparing Nancy’s hair while it’s still damp,” Jessee continues. “Sometimes I create curls and then restyle the hair into a smooth-and-sleek ’do, before finally switching-it-up to beach-y waves. I always start out by spraying Rusk Amplifier on the base and then blow-drying her hair for lift and volume. And, no matter which style I’m doing, I use Rusk W8less Plus during my initial session and throughout the day. It never builds up and eas-ily brushes out—benefits that pave the way for the next style change.” (Pssst: W8less Plus is O’Dell’s favorite hairspray!)

PBA | NCA’s New ISSE Midwest Show Exceeds Expectations & Ignites the Industry… It’s Here to Stay!

Friday, April 1st, 2011

First year show attracts over 12,500 attendees and 150 exhibitors.

Phoenix, AZ (March 31, 2011) – The Professional Beauty Association | National Cosmetology Association’s (PBA | NCA) first-ever International Salon & Spa Expo (ISSE) Midwest show left its mark on the Chicagoland area and the Midwest. Beauty professionals from all segments of the industry turned out in support of the Midwest’s newest and most complete and cost effective professional beauty show focused on hair, nails, skin care and cosmetics. Held in Rosemont, Illinois at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, ISSE Midwest attracted over 12,500 attendees and 150 exhibitors.

Attendees enjoyed three days filled with 250 high-quality educational classes based on an array of topics. The show also featured an International Talent Theater, a NAHA classroom featuring top NAHA veterans and an energetic expo floor filled with an array of products and services for professional use only. The headliners for the keynote and talent theaters included everyone from America’s top financial guru, Suze Orman, whose keynote session sold out, to industry stars such as Damien Carney, Beth Minardi, Martin Parsons, and John Simpson. Attendees were also able to obtain CE hours for certain business, hair, nails, massage and wellness classes.

Exhibitors and attendees alike appreciated savings on everything from hotel room rates to parking and the 100 percent enforcement of checking credentials to ensure that only licensed professionals were admitted into the show. While the first ISSE Midwest show was a success and provided a solid base from which to grow, PBA | NCA reiterates its desire to work with all members of the industry to create one strong and viable beauty event for the Midwest. As with all PBA | NCA events, the profits are put back into the professional beauty industry for education, government advocacy, networking, and enhancing the overall stature of beauty professionals everywhere. ISSE Midwest was no exception.

“The momentum from the first of what will be many ISSE Midwest shows is exciting and PBA is committed to providing an even better show in 2012 for the professional beauty industry,” stated Steve Sleeper, Executive Director, PBA | NCA. “As an association of industry volunteers, PBA truly appreciates the many manufacturers, distributors, salon/spa owners, and licensed professionals that believed in the vision of ISSE Midwest and were there to help bring it to life.”

Layout and Energy Allowed People to Connect

ISSE Midwest’s layout, which created a more intimate feel, allowed exhibitors and attendees to connect like never before. The intimate layout of the exhibit floor allowed exhibitors to discuss their products in more detail, and they made a deeper connection with licensed professionals who were eager to learn and buy. This approach was highly effective. From industry leaders such as CND, Conair Pro/RUSK/BaByliss Pro, Joico, Repêchage, and OPI to new trendsetters such as Hattori Hanzo Shears, Sparkleyez, and Vex|Pro, ISSE Midwest had the exhibitors the industry asked for and the list is sure to expand in 2012.

Nobody Does Education Like PBA | NCA

One of the most successful aspects of the ISSE Midwest and ISSE Long Beach shows was the array of quality education offered. Over 250 educational opportunities featuring everything from the latest in hair techniques, taught by industry leaders such as Martin Parsons, to business advice from America’s leading financial guru, Suze Orman, were offered and highly attended. From industry greats such as Beth Minardi, Martin Parsons, the RUSK Creative Team, John Simpson, and current NAHA Hairstylist of the Year, Tony Ricci, to rising stars including Faatemah Ampey, Renee Antonio, Steve Elias, and J’s Hair Academy & Studio, ISSE Midwest offered a diverse mix of premier talent which attendees were able to experience.

The NAHA Room and International Fashion Theater were two education standouts, with attendees appreciating their close proximity to the show floor and the intimate feeling of being able to connect with presenters.

The all new EstheticsAmerica + Wellness Pavilion also provided continuing education (CE) credits and classes from CIDESCO certified trainers for estheticians and massage therapists. The EsteticsAmerica + Wellness Pavilion is a new and exclusive feature of the ISSE Long Beach and ISSE Midwest shows, providing a dedicated space on the show floor for skin care and wellness products, services, and education.

Events Enhance the Excitement of ISSE Midwest

ISSE Midwest also played host to several networking receptions, hair and nail competitions, and the 2011 Legends & Icons Charity Gala. The 2011 Legends & Icons honorees included famed hairstylist, salon owner and educator, Yosh Toya (Legend) and internationally acclaimed salon colorist, educator and product consultant, Beth Minardi (Icon). The event also raised awareness and funding for the NCA CARES Fund, which serves as an umbrella fundraising effort that supports three important salon community outreach programs including Look Good… Feel Better, CUT IT OUT / Salons Against Domestic Abuse, and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund.

Enhancements Being Made to Rosemont, IL

ISSE Midwest 2012 will be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois and is scheduled for April 15 – 16, 2012. The city of Rosemont is also investing in numerous upgrades to the community and will soon open a new entertainment complex which will feature a multitude of bars, movie theaters, restaurants and entertainment venues. With the already apparent benefits and these new added features to Rosemont, this location will make for an even better ISSE Midwest show experience in 2012.
