“Illumination” Anyone?… In the Head of a Performer With John Simpson

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Vivid colors for high lights, I want some new tones, placed side-by-side… L-U-V my haircut! I know that you will want it!

Fla$h, Fla$h, Fla$h, Fla$h… Let me see that color $pla$h! I have this dress that’s tangerine, can we match it? Oh, and do you have feather lashes? Wait… What?

It is a true pleasure to share my three main intrigues that keep me inspired every single day! The love of Fashion, Finish and of course The Fabulous! Let’s take a trip in the “Now” of these three big F”s and find out the what, why and how? Ready… Set… “Illumination”Anyone?

The Fashion

Yellow and copper in a wing… With them both, I’ll have everything!

So the fab new spin in the world of color, from conservative to fashion forward to the ever-loving “ombre,” is simplifying the working zone and utilizing intentional curved sections that allow color to move and live in the appropriate rounds of the head. Don’t smother your work with 400 foils, work in elongated curves and points. You may wittle, slice and weave, though even better, take thin 1/2” block color sections that melt into one another and allow your colorations to illuminate!

Place them within a wing-like section on the round of the head and within the parietal zone or further on the contours of the crown. What you do inside them is up to you!  This will accentuate your shape perfectly and allow it to take on a new look with every twist, turn and spin! A favorite twist to red is placing it against a cool deep violet base, reflective amber sandwiched between a rich reflective red copper. My favorite formulas live in GOLDWELLS Elumen and Topchic… Intrigued? Go to goldwellnorthamerica.com to view more techniques and tones! You will love it… I just can’t deny!

The Finish

Gimme a new haircut, gimme it quick… gimme a new cut today!

The new shapes becoming the crave are pixies, bobs and lobs! They each have their own versatility and identity. The “new client” wants extreme versatility and their own unique style. Lets take a look!

Pixie – The Pixie takes a new spin this year with a fascinating new identity. The underneath is shorter and disconnected from the top, while the length of the interior is longer and more precise with soft textured layers. This multi-level effect provides endless options of style and a carefree look.

Bobs – The new Bob has an unexpected twist this year. Undercut short interior with a long drop from ear to jaw, then the back with an ear-to-nape drop exterior. Interior inversion creates flexability and movement with a blunt edge and soft texture. No fringe needed with this versatile style! No matter if its smoothe curly or textured, this new bob will provide all of the joy in life with every swing!

Lobs – With this fab shape don’t think connected, think intentional disconnection! The new approach to the Lob is a tailored blunt edge “sq-round” layer back, keeping a soft-meets-collapsed round effect with longer, disconnected drops around the sides. Take a blunt fringe to the brow with soft interior texture and this new shape will always be in elegant movement!

What makes the finish special is the blow dry! Use a classic styling and finishing brush to blow dry into shape and do not use the flat iron to make it flat! Just control the ends a bit. The perfect amount of control blow dry lotion (my favorite is GOLDWELL Style Sign Flat Marvel) and then let the style come to life!  L-U-V My Haircut!

The Fabulous

OK, the Fabulous is everything that all we do, so… the Fabulous is YOU! Hammer Time – ooh ooh ooh ooh!

The color palette of hair, fashion and face have become wildly vivid for the winter into spring of 2012! This exciting electricity is allowing us to bring excitement and purpose into everything which is design. In the hair, it’s strategic color placement that is a perfect accent to the darker base. In fashion, the brights against the darks create the sexy movement of a dress that melts into a deeper shade at the base to tip (kinda like ombre… hmmmm?). The perfect asymmetric cutouts or chest fabric overlap, or even the high pleat side or gathering of the skirt is the perfect match to the shape and the tone of the hair! Start living in color and embracing everything you see around you! I think you may be surprised once you let your eye wander deeper into design and color! Also if you visit the fashion stylings of Dior, Nicole Miller and even  American Apparel, you will see it has come to life! DIOR… WERK! Let me see that color $pla$h!

The Face

On the face we’re finding lip and shadow colors reminiscent of the late 80′s and early 90′s with loads of liner against vivid solid shadow shades over the lower lid, and it’s even translated into the nail polish shades!

The pallets are made up of yellows, olive greens, blue orchid turquoise, marmalade orange, soft rose, and electric violet. Sounds intriguing, yes? Have fun and paint every canvas: make it special, make it fun, but more than anything, make it you! You got to get your paint today! Thinking of that D-D-D-D Dancing in the Dark girl! Oh no worries… with all that bright color, I’ll see ya girl! Lol. Oh and PS, they are not done with feathers, except on the lashes! Lol!

Who’s taking us into the winter/spring with their new vibrant beats and rhythmic chants? It’s Miss Madonna, of course! Taking it back a bit but keeping it sexy with a new twist to the “Mickey” song (I don’t get the videos meaning but it’s kinda hot! Maybe I’m old? Oh, I hope not!)  Miss Nicki Minaj is belting it out as always and mixing it up with more artists giving us a hybrid GaGa/Lil Kim feel (the club mixes… so sickening!) I would like to see this “Clap” their talking about! And this man that sings the spin on Paula Abdul’s  “Straight Up” song! Love it but I don’t really know what he’s saying after the chorus (Oh my… I may be getting old! Oh, I’ll just Google it!)

I hope that you enjoyed, and I can’t wait for you to visit again next month for another dip & a trip! I am fortunate to be able to view the world, as I am sure most of you are, a bit differently! Finding beauty in everything I see and everything I do! I crave the inspiration from the 3 F’s and this gives me my interpretation of what I want to put into hair! I tell myself every day that… “Life is not a dress rehearsal… live it , love it, create it!”

New Hampshire Legislative Update

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

New Hampshire’s State Legislature will soon vote on HB1265 and HB1431 which will directly impact the professional beauty industry.

HB1265 establishes criteria for the regulation of occupations and professions by boards and commissions as authorized by law, and provides that an individual may engage in a legal occupation (such as cosmetology) without being subject to laws that regulate the occupation or profession which are arbitrary, unnecessary, or substantially burdensome.

BILL SPONSORS: Representatives Spec Bowers, Joshua Davenport, Seth Cohn, and George Lambert.

HB1431 repeals the requirements of high school education and hours of training or apprenticeship required for obtaining a barber license, leaving as requirements only good professional character, passage of an examination, and paying the license fee.

BILL SPONSORS: Representatives Spec Bowers, Tammy Simmons, Peter Hansen, Jason Antosz, Michael Reed, Donald LeBrun, and Kyle Tasker.

Licensed professionals, business owners, distributors, and manufacturers maintain a high standard of professionalism and legitimacy through education, best practices, health and safety, and complying with regulations that protect the industry as well as the consumer.  These bills does not support our industry or our professional goals.

US News Names Cosmetology Best Job in 2012, Forecasts Growth Over Next Decade

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

In an article posted February 27, US News and World Report names being a hairdresser as one of the best jobs for 2012 and forecasts significant growth over the next decade. According to the article, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics “projects 15.7 percent employment growth for hairdressers between 2010 and 2020. In that time period, nearly 98,400 cosmetologist positions will need to be filled.”

Below is a sneak peek at the article:

“Keeping up with the latest beauty trends is important to many of us, and it’s a professional necessity for a hairdresser… these trained professionals offer a wide range of beauty services, but are particularly capable at shampooing, cutting, styling, and coloring hair. Some are also trained and licensed to give manicures, pedicures, skin treatments, and to apply makeup. Those in the profession often advise and collaborate with their clients on the best hair care and skin practices. As such, it’s important for a hairdresser to have good interpersonal skills, in addition to an adeptness for and familiarity with the latest style trends. ‘There’s so much more to what we do than cutting hair,’ says Scott J. Buchanan, president of Scott J. Salons in New York City and the vice chairman of the Professional Beauty Association. ‘We also get to change people’s lives and make them feel good about themselves.’” Read more.

Over 40,000 Beauty Professionals Help Make PBA’s 2012 International Salon & Spa Expo Long Beach a Huge Success

Industry Responds to ISSE Concept of Creating a Professionally Focused Total Beauty Event

Phoenix, AZ (February 1, 2012) – The 2012 International Salon & Spa Expo Long Beach (ISSE Long Beach) re-affirmed its position as the West Coast’s biggest and best total beauty event as an energetic crowd of over 40,000 beauty professionals (up slightly from 2011) from around the world attended the show. Produced by the Professional Beauty Association (PBA), the ISSE concept has evolved beyond the traditional “hair show” to a complete beauty event relating to hair, nails, cosmetics, esthetics, wellness, massage, and advanced education.

Known as the launching place for new beauty products and services, ISSE Long Beach featured a sold-out expo floor, consisting of more than 400 leading beauty brands. Ranging from international beauty leaders that included BaBylissPRO, Clairol Professional, CND, Moroccan Oil, Orly, Repêchage, RUSK, TIGI, and Wahl to indie trend-setters such as Body Up Pro, Hair Flairs, Rock Your Hair, and Young Nails; ISSE Long Beach always has a diverse exhibitor base, and 2012 was no exception. On-site sales and reservations for 2013 exhibit space were also very strong as exhibitors did not want to miss out.

ISSE Long Beach also featured more than 183 complimentary educational opportunities that were included as part of the ISSE Long Beach ticket. The NAHA Stage, which featured many past NAHA winners such as Damien Carney, Steve Elias, Jake Thompson, and Charlie Price, was continually at room capacity. Beauty professionals wanted to learn first-hand from these individuals on how to conceptualize and create a winning NAHA entry.

Many of the same features that make ISSE Long Beach a success will also be incorporated into ISSE Midwest. The ISSE Midwest show, which runs November 4 – 5, 2012 in the Chicagoland area, will not serve as the industry’s much needed and requested Fall/holiday show.

ISSE Long Beach 2012 Show Highlights

Expansion of the EstheticsAmerica & Wellness Pavilion:  ISSE Long Beach 2012 saw the expansion of its increasingly popular EstheticsAmerica & Wellness Pavilion, which provides a dedicated environment for skin care, cosmetics, massage, wellness and the latest in treatments and education for these rapidly expanding segments of the beauty industry. CIDESCO USA education was also offered and continues to be a desirable option for many esthetic professionals looking to continue their education. PBA aims to continue the growth of the pavilion for the 2013 show with even more esthetic brands and classes.

New Hair Competitions Were A Success: For 2012, ISSE Long Beach offered its first hair competitions. Hosted by Mark Goodman, immediate past President of PBA’s Beauty Professional/NCA section, and open to students and licensed professionals, the hair competitions allowed individuals to show off their skills and win cash and career prestige. For the licensed professional (senior) division, the competitions served as tryouts for the OMC HairWorld USA team for 2012. The members of Team USA will be selected and announced within the next few weeks. While honors were given to the top seven in each category, the winners included:

Presenters included Damien Carney, Tony Ricci, John Simpson, Jake Thompson, Charlie Price, The Teals featuring Steve Elias, and others. Every class was completely full or very close due to overwhelming demand.

Awards for Top Booths Spark Competition: Many companies launched new and/or expanded booths. From layout and signage updates to complete makeovers, firms invested in their image. Launched in 2011, ISSE Long Beach awards top honors for booths, which come with free advertisements in pre and onsite materials for the 2013 show. Winning booths at ISSE Long Beach 2012 include:

  • Best Island/Peninsula Booth: TIGI
  • Best Large Linear Booth: Doll hair care
  • Best Linear Booth: Trestles Hair Extensions

Revamped Stage Concepts: Focused on continually evolving to meet the needs of the industry, ISSE Long Beach revamped some of its stage concepts and streamlined offerings to help attendees better access presentations and maximize their time at the show. Center Stage (formerly International Fashion Theater) and Stage Right (formerly Technical Theater) were again popular with attendees and featured top creative teams and educators from across the industry.

ISSE Long Beach and ISSE Midwest (November 4 – 5, 2012) are open to licensed salon/spa professionals, cosmetology students and instructors only. To maintain a professional atmosphere, attendees must present proof of license and a valid photo ID. For additional information on ISSE Long Beach and ISSE Midwest, please visit probeauty.org/isse.

Brazilian Blowout Pays $600,000 Settlement, Changes Labeling

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

From Fox New.com, January 31, 2012:

“The maker of a popular line of hair-straightening products has agreed to alert consumers that two of its formulations emit formaldehyde gas, a possible carcinogen, California’s attorney general announced.

The labeling changes are designed to settle a lawsuit the state filed in November against the company that makes Brazilian Blowout products, which have been a boon for those who dislike their naturally curly tresses but a source of health concerns.”
