The professional beauty industry continues to grow, according to the Professional Beauty Association’s (PBA) Semi-Annual Distributor Benchmarking Survey, released this past July. The survey tracked responses from 36 small to large beauty distributors, prompting detailed information on sales, changes to product lines, store activity, employees and educational offerings.

Results indicate steady momentum in the growth of the distribution sector. “Sixty-five percent of participants reported increased sales during the first six months of the year,” said Steve Neumaier, President of Goldwell New York and chair of the PBA task force charged with managing this research effort. “This shows a marked improvement over the second half of 2012. The median sales increase was 13 percent, which highlights the continued strength of the professional beauty industry.”

Salon oriented education continues to be an important and growing part of successful distributor businesses. Thirty-one percent of participating distributors reported adding employees to their education departments, emphasizing the importance of education in driving sales.

PBA conducts and publishes survey results semi-annually and biennially. Providing both quantitative and qualitative data, the semi-annual study includes information on five primary business sections: sales, product lines, stores, employees and education and the full biennial version, which was released in early 2013, includes those sections as well as sections on human resources, financial data, warehouse/freight, advertising/promotion and business conditions.
