How to Enter NAHA

  1. Select your category

    Click on your desired category for details on entry in the category, requirements and release forms.

  2. Build your collection

    Be sure to follow competition rules, requirements, category rules and image specifications noted for your chosen category.

  3. Pay your entry fees

  4. Submit your collection

    Entry opens June 6, 2019. All entries must be submitted by the August 8, 2019 at 6pm PDT. No entries will be accepted after that date and time.

General Rules & Regulations

All entries must be submitted online by the deadline – Thursday, August 8, 2019 no later than 9pm EDT/6PM PDT

  • Entrants must be currently licensed cosmetologists, barbers and/or nail technicians*
  • Entrants must reside in Canada, United States or Mexico
  • The Student Hairstylist of the Year category is restricted to those students currently enrolled in cosmetology school or performing required hours in a salon as of June 6, 2019 and not licensed as of August 8, 2019
  • Makeup Artist of the Year entrants do not have to be a certified makeup artist or have attended a makeup artistry school
  • The Salon/School Design of the year category must be submitted by the Salon or School Owner

*Exceptions are for Student Hairstylist of the Year, Makeup Artist of the Year and Salon/School Design of the Year.

PBA Member Pricing

Regular Pricing

  • $120 per submission
  • $80 Student Hairstylist of the Year submission

All work is accepted in good faith. Instant disqualification will apply to any entrants found abusing this.

  • Images must be no larger than 8MB
  • All image files must be in JPEG (.jpg) format (.tiff, Bitmaps, PDFs, etc. will not be accepted)
  • Images must be 8x10 inches with a resolution of 300DPI (CMPI not accepted)

NOTE: Entries that do not comply with the above requirements will not be processed.

All submissions must include un-retouched photos for each of the final images in your collection. These images must come directly from your photographer, but with no retouching, editing or manipulations.

Un-retouched images are used for judging purposes only and will not be released in any way. They are used to provide context for the judges if they feel there has been over manipulation.

Collections submitted for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) must not have been published* in any format including consumer or trade media or via any personal or business platforms.

Collections must not have been submitted to any other regional, national or international competition.

*NOTE: This rule does not apply to Editorial/Session Stylist of the Year.

Collections may be published as soon as the finalist announcements have been made. The 2020 NAHA finalist announcement will be made on Thursday, November 14, 2019.

In all internal and external communications, publicity, marketing and PR, NAHA finalists and winners must include the year of their award alongside their title. Example: John Smith – 2019 NAHA Hairstylist of the Year

  • Entrants may enter the same collection of images into as many categories as they would like with the following exceptions:
    • Images entered in the following categories cannot be entered into any other category: Editorial/Session Stylist of the Year, Hairstylist of the Year, Master Hairstylist of the Year, Newcomer Stylist of the Year, Student Hairstylist of the Year, Team of the Year
    • Images entered into the Texture category may not be utilized in the Styling and Finishing category and vice versa
  • Entrants are allowed to submit up to three collections per category.

Who are the judges?

  • A select panel of internationally renowned stylists, photographers and top beauty editors from consumer and trade magazines
  • All collections are judged anonymously and independently – judges are unable to see the name or salon name of the entrants
  • Any judge who is personally entering a category, knows an entrant in a category or has given advice to any entrant in a category is excluded from judging that category entirely

First Round Judging

  • Unretouched images are compared to the final images to look for any excessive photo editing or photo editing that breaks specific category rules
  • As each judge completes their judging form for one category, their form is handed to the independent collaborator
  • Judges are not allowed to discuss any entries before, during or after the judging with each signing a non-disclosure agreement
  • The whole process is supervised and strictly controlled

Second Round Judging

  • Takes place online
  • Each judge is assigned specific categories to critique based on their qualifications. Each entry is given a score and the top five within the category are notified as finalists

Third Round Judging

  • Takes place online
  • Each judge is assigned specific categories to critique based on their qualifications. Each entry is given a score to help determine the winners
